RAINWATER HARVESTING
Domestic and Commercial Solutions

Domestic Rainwater Harvesting
An introduction

The Need for Rainwater Harvesting

In todays climate, water is an expensive commodity. As a result of an increase in demand,
and water reserves continuing to decline, the amount available to us is falling and water
charges are continuing to increase year on year.
Despite the fact that England and Wales appear to have plenty of rain, our growing
population and the potential changes in climate mean that our water resources are
under pressure. The large number of new houses due to be built over the next few years
will increase the competition for available water between the environment and people,
especially in the South-East of England which has low water resource availability.
Reducing demand for mains water can help to reconcile these competing needs. One way
of reducing demand is to use a rainwater harvesting system to provide water for domestic
uses.

Our Climate

Climate change is forecast to have a two-fold impact on water resources. It will reduce the
amount of water available for public supply and it will increase customer demand for water,
particularly in the garden. The latest predictions also suggest that we can expect warmer
winters and drier, hotter summers.

Legislation

Legislation was introduced by the Government in 2006 to give water companies the right
to compulsorily meter all of its customers. Currently 40% of UK residents have a water
meter installed, however this legislation is looking to increase this to 90% over the next 10
years to provide an estimated water saving of 10-15%.

The Benefits

Up to 50% of the drinking water that is currently used can be safely replaced with rainwater
without any inconvenience. Rainwater, often referred to as soft water, can be efficiently
harvested and used for applications such as laundry, flushing toilets, general cleaning, car
cleaning and garden irrigation.

Commercial Rainwater Harvesting

Our Commercial Rainwater Harvesting System is ideal for a wide
range of businesses, whether commercial or industrial. The main
benefits are:

typical_apps.gif- The harvested water can be used for toilet flushing, laundry,
general cleaning, washing cars and watering plants. Not to
be used in applications where the water is used for human
consumption such as drinking and food preparation.

- Helps alliviate flood risks by collecting excess water

- Provides a source of usable water during periods of lower rainfall

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme has now been
accredited to WPL’s new commercial rainwater harvesting system
– the Eco Range.

The ECA has been accredited to the WPL Eco Range by The Carbon
Trust on behalf of the government. The Carbon Trust is a private
company set up by the government to promote solutions tackling
climate change.

The ECA scheme allows businesses to claim 100% first year tax relief
on their qualifying capital expenditure. Businesses can write off the
whole of the capital cost of their investment against their taxable
profits of the period during which they make the investment (for
further information please visit www.eca.gov.uk/energy).

‘Water is an increasingly expensive resource with mains,
sewerage and trade effluent charges all rising.
Reducing your water consumption is one of the easiest and
most inexpensive ways to achieve cost savings - just taking
simple measures can cut figures by 50%.’

Developer’s Rainwater Harvesting

Sustainable Homes
In December 2006 the Government introduced the code for sustainable homes which was described as
bringing ‘a step-change in sustainable home building practice’. It is a standard with the key elements of
home design and construction which will affect the sustainability of a new home. It is also the reference
document which will form the basis for future developments in building regulations. The code is
designed to benefit the environment, home builders, social housing providers and consumers.
Within the code is a set of sustainable design principles which include: water and surface water run-off.
The code uses a sustainability rating system which uses ‘stars’ to demonstrate the overall sustainability of
a home. The range is from 1-6 stars. Six stars indicate exemplar development in sustainability terms.
A growing number of planners and developers’ customers are already asking for the design and
construction to be at a 5 or 6 star rating. WPL rainwater harvesting systems are designed to provide
sufficient water for a property to have 21 days water storage capacity and this reduces the potable water
consumption to be significantly less than 80 litres per person per day thereby enabling an immediate 6
star rating.
